About John S Gibb
John Stephen Gibb was born in 1939 at Dalton-in-Furness on the edge of the English Lake District. It was there that he developed his love of the outdoors and mountaineering.
His school years were notable for a complete lack of success, owing to his dyslexia, which went unrecognised. He attended a local art school for a short period in the 1950’s – again with little success.
From the early 1960’s until the 1980’s, it was a life of adventure or irresponsibility. His travels took him to Scandinavia for the mountaineering and skiing. He worked for a time as a lumberjack in Sweden, and as a seaman in the Norwegian Merchant Marine.
He became a yacht master, on one occasion crossing the Atlantic under sail.
After working as a commercial diver in Trinidad and South America, he settled for a while in Jamaica. He spent some time sailing in the Caribbean, delivering yachts for owners mostly from North America to the West Indies. He developed his own watersports business in Jamaica, always making sure that he left as much time for skiing in New England as possible.
He returned to England in the eary 1980’s with a serious ski injury and it was then that he re-invented himself as an artist.
